Why would the saviors name be yoshua when it was a common hebrew name?

Jesus' hebrew form is supposed to be yoshua. But yoshua was a common hebrew name. And jesus was a greek name why would a hebrew family name their child a greek name? What about immanuel?

The New Testament was written in Greek, so the Hebrew name Yeshu'a was grecized to the form "Iesous". The form you know, "Jesus", is the English form.
Reply:Actually, it's not. In fact, yoshua is not a Hebrew name at all. Jesus is YEshua, and, it means savior, and, in fact, it WAS a common name in his day. The idea was, that by naming your child "savior" you were contributing to the coming of the messiah. In fact, there were many people who might have risen to the ranks of "savior" given that fact.





In fact, the name Joshua, is YeHOshua, in Hebrew.
Reply:Yeshua is from the Aramaic which was the language spoken in the 1st century in the Judea and Galilee. The new testament was written mostly in Greek, so Jesus came along.


Immanuel is from Isiah
Reply:Ioseus was the Greek form of Yoshua, and Became spelled Jesus due to the European tendency for J's to be pronounced like a Y.





Joshua would be closer to his real name than Jesus.

Paul named him Jesus to give him a more.... 'apt' name considering his importance- hence why its greek
Reply:Jesus was Jewish, his parents gave him a Jewish name. But the NT was written in Greek first of all.
