JEWS PLEASE???!!!!Who was Rebekah and what is her real name written in Hebrew? How do I pronounce it?

Rebekah = 专讬讘拽讛 (meaning to tie/bind, captivating).

* Hebrew is written from right to left.

Rebekah in Hebrew is pronounced Reevqa (Rivqa). She is the wife of Isaac and the mother of Jacob and Esau. She is also the second of four matriarchs of the Jewish people.

Hope this helps! Let me know if you have other questions =]

Reply:专讬讘拽讛 - Hebrew is written from right to left.

Rebekah in Hebrew is pronounced Reevka. She is the wife of Isaac and the mother of Jacob and Esau. She is also the second of four matriarchs of the Jewish people.

If you're planning on trying to impress a Jewish girl by knowing how to pronounce her Hebrew name you'll probably be very disappointed, especially once she realizes that's the full extent of your Hebrew/Jewish knowledge.
Reply:You pronounce it Riv-Ka, in hebrew: "专讘拽讛".

She is the wife of Isaac and the mother of Jacob.

She's also one of the "Four Mothers" on the begining of the Jewish religion.

I can't get the Hebrew characters to work on this site. Download a Hebrew font online (Bwhebb, if you can get it), and just type in the English letters, backwards.

I WANT TO HELP MY SONS NAME IN HEBREW TATOOED IN MY BACK BUT I CAN'T FIND THE RIGHT SPELLING IN HEBREW.

I need help spelling my sons name (Anthony) in Hebrew. Can anyone help me, Please?
That's because it's not a Hebrew name. You could transliterate it into Hebrew characters, but that's it. Also, tattooing is forbidden by Jewish law, so...

I'd say, aleph - nun - tet - vav - nun - yod
Reply:Anthony is not hebrew, but you can transliterate it as follows:

A 讗

N 谞

T 转 or 讟

H 讛

O

N 谞

Y 讬

Since written hebrew is mostly an abjad, it doesn't really have written vowels. the last is a Y. ut that would be up to you. the "e" is oundis technically more correct, but again, since it's not there I just put the Y.

Let me know if this takes care of you.

Can someone write this name in Hebrew?

Hi, my brother is getting a tattoo, he wants his name in hebrew but we are not sure how to write it.

His name is Erubiel

Thank You :)

Can someone write this name in Hebrew?
not sure, but you can look into it, not all names translate
Reply:Speaking only as a Hebrew speaker (I'm Jewish, but that's not the point) and someone who's already got Hebrew on their body:

Erubiel is a name of Spanish origin - which is derived from Latin to begin with - not Hebrew.

While a direct transliteration MAY be possible, there's no way of knowing for sure if your transliteration is correct. For instance, the "eh" noise at the beginning of the name is only a Hebrew vowel, which would need to be paired with a silent letter. However, there are two silent letters in Hebrew, the Aleph and the Ayin - and since Erubiel's not a Hebrew name, you would have no way to know if you had picked the "correct" letter.

I wouldn't translate Spanish to Hebrew - you end up with a wonky transliteration, is all.
Reply:My opinion is that you shouldn't get a word in a different language if you can't write it yourself. Otherwise there's no real way of knowing you got it right and it's just kinda weird. If you really want a translation, go to synagogue or Hebrew teacher and ask.
Reply:Its only the religion that states u cant "deface" your body, no1 knows if a god said that unless thay had an actual conversation

Reply:If you are Jewish, you are breaking Jewish law by getting a tatoo. You are not allowed to put any marks on your body. Your body is a temple to G-d.

What are some pretty Hebrew/Israeli names for a young girl?

I'm writing a short story about a young girl growing up in America with Israeli parents, but have yet to decide as to what her (the main character's) name will be. Could anyone give me some ideas for pretty hebrew names Israeli parents might use for a daughter? Would be greatly appreciated!

What are some pretty Hebrew/Israeli names for a young girl?
My daughter's name is Yael (Ya-el). She was an ancient queen who killed a king. In contemporary Hebrew it is a billy goat type animal. Perfect for her temper. Can you believe how many racist people answered.
Reply:Ariel-- Hebrew, "lioness of God." Also spelled Arielle.

Dafna-- Hebrew, "bay, daphne, laurel." Corresponds to the name

Liora-- Hebrew, "light"

Maayan-- Hebrew, "spring-water"

Ofra-- Hebrew, "young deer"

Shiloh-- Hebrew, 'his gift"

Shira-- Hebrew, "song, chant, poem"

Tamar-- Hebrew, "palm tree, date tree." Another form is Tamara.

Yarden-- Hebrew, "River Jordan".
Reply:My favorite Hebrew name is Sarah. It is short and sounds nice. Here's a site with Hebrew names and their meanings so maybe you can chose a name with a cool meaning and somehow connect it to her personality.

Reply:why is that? you can include the vowels if you want, in fact the script would look more beautiful with the vowels (the vowels are not added not because they don't exist but because native speakers don't need it in order to understand the word, however; unlike English, the vowels are not letters, rather diacritics added below the consonants)

According to behindthename.com Adriana is a name with Spanish, Italian, Portugese, Polish and other origins. It's also the feminine form of Adrian, which in turn is a form of Hadrianus/Hadrian meaning from Hadria, which was a town in northern Italy.

So, since Adriana is not a name of Hebrew origins, there is no direct equivalent of it in Hebrew.

Kaye-Jodie would be written:

second and third letters, reading from right to left, and the last letter, on the left).

Highly doubtful if there is a direct translation for this name in Hebrew. Here are the English definitions: "land by the road" or "road land" or possibly "land of war". Thanks.

Literal translations:

way land (land of the way/road): ארץ הדרך - erets haderech

land of war: ארץ מלחמה - erets milchama

pronounce 'ch' as in Scottish loch or the Hebrew name Chaim.

Naturally, these are literal translations, not typical Hebrew names.

What does the name Yahaims mean in Hebrew?

Hmm, interesting to get an answer from a... ahm, first-hand experience...

Anyway -

Yahaims is not a Hebrew name (no original Hebrew word ends with two consonants).

There's "Haim", which means "life".

There's "Yochai" which I'm not so sure about the meaning.

Yahweh (probably not what you are looking for) is the Not so secret name of God (in hebrew) and the God I (Lilith) said that allowed me to fly out of the Garden of Eden...when I refused to lay under Adam during intercoarse.

Hebrew last name help...?
It depends on the ethnicity of the characters. Are they Ashkenazi? Sephardic? Mizrahi?

Also, if you need any symbolic name that originates from Hebrew, describe your characters for us (e.g. a brave man may bear the surname "gur-arye": Hebrew for "son of a lion").

Reply:Levi
Reply:Ashkenazi, Sephardic, Falasha, Morrocan? "Hebrew" names depend on historical and geographic specifics.
Reply:Although somewhere in lore Hebrew characters may have "last" names, they are normally called by one name (For example: alef is the first character). These characters are called similar names to Greek characters (alef vs alpha; dollit vs delta).

I think you can find the Hebrew alphabet character names on Wikipedia.

If you want to find out the Hebrew spelling of your first or last name you could try downloading a Hebrew font or looking for one in your processor. However, you would need to make three changes -- Make your "U"s or "O"s into "V"s; Make your "ee"s into "Y"s and then just convert to Hebrew characters. I am unclear exactly what your question is.

Extra info: The word David can have two Hebrew spellings, depending on when the scribes writing that point of the Bible lived.

Reply:The transliteration of Ingrid is 讗讬谞讙专讬讚.
Reply:INGRID is a variant Scandinavian form of INGA, from the Old English ing meaning A MEADOW; or from a contraction of the Old English incga meaning CHILDREN.

INGRID is a variant form of the Swedish INGA meaning HERO'S DAUGHTER. In Norse mythology, ING was the god of fertility and peace.

In the Hebrew alphabet the letters are AYIN YUD NUN GIMEL RESH DALET. Taken together and reading right to left, they spell INGRID. This name has been transliterated into the Hebrew phonetically.

This is a very close equivalent in our latin alphabet:

Ayin = Silent

Yud = Y

Nun = N

Gimel = G

Resh = R

Dalet = D

Here is an hebrew alphabet table, you can put the letters together, my keyboard doesn't have an alphabet equivalent.

Just remember, hebrew is written from right to left.

Reply:Kaph, Mem ,Beth , Resh , Lamed , Yod

This is how I would do it ... Don't pay anyone- that would be siily ...

Hebrew is a 22 glyph consonantal alphabet ...6th to seventh century little markings were added to inflect vowels ...

despite being consonantal some of the glyphs are similar to our vowels ...

I don't have a Hebraic font ...but you should be able to find these easily ..

Kaph is a (K) sound ,I would not suggest the "Chith" which is more a harsh "Ch" ...additionally you could add another "Yod" between K and M ...but that would not really flow like natural Hebrew ...so Mem is (M) ..."Beth" is "B" ..."Resh" is "R" ;note again I left the schwa simply inflected ...and "lamed" for "L" and "Yod" for the final y ...

But you know Kimberly isn't naturally Hebrew obcourse ...but I have stayed as true as possible to the language flow ...

edit: osho's is not bad ...he went with "Chith", "Yod" before the "Mem"...Personally I'd go "Kaph" then "Mem" ...other than that we were the same ... and note:we both mean go from right to left ...

I am looking to get my wife's name tattooed on my wrist in hebrew lettering - her name is Nicole. Thanks!?

Thank you for anything you can offer

I am looking to get my wife's name tattooed on my wrist in hebrew lettering - her name is Nicole. Thanks!?
There are two ways of finding one's Hebrew name: find a name with a similar meaning or similar sound.

Nicole, according to Parenthood.com, means "people's victory". That would most likely correspond to the Hebrew name of Gvirah which means "a mighty heroine".

The most similar sounding girl's name in Hebrew would be Nechama, which means soothing or consoling.

Hopefully that helps you out some, good luck! All the best! :-)
Reply:well i would recommend if your absolutely serious, first go to some who is fluent in hebrew to double check the puncuation and spelling, but if you're jewish, and want to lead a jewish life i would rethink it since you can't be buried in a jewish cemetary if you have a tatto, but if you not jewish, hell go for it.
Reply:Look up the phonetic value of the Hebrew letters, then make them spell Nicole, that's the easiest way to do it. Find the one that makes the 'n' sound, then the short 'i' sound, and so on.

You should be able to find a chart of the phonetic values of the letters on wikipedia.

If "helel" in Hebrew is "halal" in Arabic WHY is it the name of Lucifer the Fallen Archangel ?

Morning Star Venus. Thanks, to let me know your opinion if you know the answer.

If "helel" in Hebrew is "halal" in Arabic WHY is it the name of Lucifer the Fallen Archangel ?
Lucifer is not a Semitic (Arabic or Hebrew) word.

It is derived from Latin (like the name "Lucy"=light, with the suffix "-ifer" maning "bringer".) So the "light-bringer" star, usually the brightest object in the morning sky next to the moon, is also called Venus, and is understood by modern astronomy to be the seconmd planet from the sun. The naming of celestial objects is purely arbitrary, an atrifact of the cultures and mythologies of the people making the observations and giving them labels.

Does anyone Hebrew characters for the name "Gershom"?

If you aren't allowed to post the characters on Y!A, I'd appreciated it. You'll get 10 points.

Also, does anyone know the exact meaning? Some sources say "stranger" while other says "the exiled one".

Does anyone Hebrew characters for the name "Gershom"?
It's either גרשום or גרשֹם

It has nothing to do with גירש ("banished").

גר ("Ger") is a stranger/foreigner.

The first occurrence of this name is in Exodus 2:23, which explains the name: "For I've been a stranger in a foreign land".

Reply:גּרשׁום

Gimel resh shin vav mem.

According to Strong's concordance, it means "refugee".

From the word "Garash" meaing to "drive out" or divorce, or more properly to usurp a persons property/position by driving them out.

So Gershom could mean "usurped", "driven out", "divorced one", or "refugee".

Gershom was a son of Moses, and therefore it became a rather traditional Hebrew name.

I need the name Justine translated into Hebrew symbols. Anyone available to help me out?

I think it's just yusteen. spelled in Hebrew, but I don't have time to figure that out right now. I'll come back if I have time, later.

I would go with 讬讜住讟讬谉

That's just a literal transliteration...putting a dalet (讚) at the beginning makes the J sound like the English, but putting a gimel (讙) there just doesn't seem right to me.

I suggest using the literal transliteration, because Justine is a Latin name, and I would think that for Hebrew, you would go back to the Latin pronunciation, and then spell it that way. If you were going with the modern English pronunciation, go with this spelling: 讚讬讜住讟讬谉

Rahm Israel Emanuel chief of staff , his name in Hebrew means God is with us. Do you agree ?
He's a liberal, the wrong side. Please read my quote of the day:

Henry Lamb:

"Like Obama, some people really believe that when government redistributes wealth, "it's good for everybody." They do not realize that wealth redistribution is no substitute for wealth creation. They are never taught that the only way to create wealth is for an individual to combine his energy and intellect with resources to produce a product that improves his life, or for which someone else is willing to pay. Private property, the accumulation of personal prosperity and individual achievement are anathema to socialism. Socialism sees the individual as nothing more than a cog in a government-run machine designed to ensure equity for all. Capitalism seeks prosperity; socialism seeks equity. Freedom increases as prosperity increases. In a socialist system, there can be neither."

Allison written in Hebrew lettering (transliteration) is:

I'm guessing that's what you want, and it's your best option.

Allison means "Little Alice"; Alice means "of noble kindred," and is not originally a Hebrew name. A Hebrew translation of all that would be cumbersome, but "noble" in Hebrew is:

How do you spell the name Patric in Hebrew?
驻讟专讬拽

With vowels: 驻旨侄讟职专执讬拽

It is spelled Peh, Tet, Reish, Yud Kuf.
Reply:PATRICK is from the Latin Patricius meaning PATRICIAN, A PERSON OF NOBLE DESCENT.

Variant spellings - PATRIC - PADRAIC -PATRIK - PATRYK

驻转专拽

The letters featured above are PEY TET RESH KUF Taken all together they spell PATRICK. This name has been transliterated into the Hebrew phonetically.

Each of the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet has a special meaning and a story to tell. Here are a few brief ones about the letters on this card.

PEY is the 17th letter of the Hebrew alphabet and has a numerical value of 80. PEY makes a sound either like the P in Peace or the F in Food. PEY means MOUTH and is constructed of a CAF with a YUD situated at the top and rotated inward.

If one looks carefully at the PEY one can see that there is a BEIT, which makes up the empty space within it. The BEIT is the first letter of the word BERESHIT - IN A BEGINNING, which is the first word of TORAH. God opened up God's MOUTH and out came the BEIT - BEGINNING - CREATION.

TET is the 9th letter of the alphabet and has a numerical value of 9. TET makes a sound like the T in Truth. The shape of the TET is like a bowl. The left side of the bowl resembles a ZAYIN. The TET is frequently associated with the word TOV - GOOD

RESH is the 20th letter of the Hebrew alphabet and has a numerical value of 200. RESH makes a sound like the R in Radiant. RESH means BEGINNING or HEAD. When one spells out the letter RESH in Hebrew, it is RESH YUD SHIN. YUD and SHIN spell YESH - THERE IS. The letter RESH means BEGINNING. So it is possible to say that the RESH literally means THERE IS A BEGINNING

KUF is the 19th letter of the Hebrew alphabet and has a numerical value of 100. KUF makes a sound like the K in Kind. KUF means TO SURROUND, TO TOUCH, MONKEY. KUF is constructed of a CAF (20) and a VAV (6) = 26. This is the same GEMATRIA as that of the YUD (10) HEY (5) VAV 6) HEY (5) name of God. KUF is associated with the word KADOSH - HOLY.
Reply:驻转专拽 Of course, Patrick is NOT a name available in Yvrit.

perhaps the entire NT is allegory, not history; with the original attempt being to remind the jews that "YHVH saves"... and lead people back to the written torah and away from the oral torah; not unlike the karaite jews who also reject the oral torah.

How come we don't really know what Jesus' Hebrew name was?

Was Christianity purely a Greek thing?

How come we don't really know what Jesus' Hebrew name was?
Yeshua (and variants) was a common name back then -- which leads to confusion whenever later Hebrew texts mention a Yeshua; Christians assume that it has to be referring to their Yeshua. :-)

It's not quite John Doe. But it's not all that far off either.

Christianity was initially a "Jewish thing"

They call him Benedict. Spinoza's original name was Baruch; he changed to Benedict it once he formally abandoned Judaism.

The pope has never had a Jewish name.

A person's name is what he calls himself.

Benedictus is Benedictus.

Yehsua or Yahshua which is the correct Hebrew name of the Savior?

Judaism has long tried to hide the savior's true name. Yeshua is part of their plan.

see link for more info.

Yehsua or Yahshua which is the correct Hebrew name of the Savior?
Yeshua= Jesus Christ the Savior.
Reply:The correct Hebrew spelling is YHSVH. Jehovah is YHVH. The S is the letter Shin, which means Spirit. The other letters stand for the 4 elements. This is Judistic Mysticism, most people do not know about it. The real meaning is that the title YHSVH means perfected or enlightened human being - the 4 elements or old conception of God has been enlightened by the addition of Spirit. Any person can claim the title Jesus if they have attained certain level of consciousness beyond what the everyday human does. Most will call this blasphemy but it is the truth.

There is a lot ignorance here regarding these posts. If you wish to know more look up the Tetragrammaton that is what YHVH is. There is more to the Bible than most care to know.
Reply:The most accurate spelling is Y'shua; most Messianic Jews spell it as Yeshua.

Remember, the English spelling of this Hebrew name is phonetic; so all variations are technically correct.

EDIT: "King Zorglub," perhaps you think there is no one here who understands that your answer is a slur against Yeshua.

You were wrong.
Reply:The CORRECT way is simply YHVH. Moses wrote it without vowels. The vowels were added in the 7th Century AD.
Reply:Yehshua= Yesu (shortened form) = Isus (Greek) = Jesus (English)

The Hebrew name is correctly translated into English as Joshua.
Reply:Your icon says it all: YHWH (adding vowels make it Yahweh). This is the 'name' of G-d which is forbidden to say for fear of blasphemy.
Reply:josiah or yosiah
Reply:The Complete Jewish Bible, translated and written by an Hebrew scholar, spells it "Yeshua". True, they didn't use vowels in the past for God's name, but for modern, non Jewish readers, He inserted vowels so they would know how to pronounce it.
Reply:Technically...it's neither. There are no vowels in "God's name".

It's purely "YHVH"

Good luck, and may God continue to bless you!

-Shalom
Reply:Within the context of your question, neither is correct. As superpest_99 points out, the correct spelling is Yeshua. It is for God the Son (Jesus), not God the Father YHVH.
Reply:Depends on the vowel points doesn't it.

Yeesh -oo'- aw is how the Hebrew word for salvation is pronounced which is why so my of our brethern use Yeshua

Also Yeh-shah which is also used to come with those who call him Yeshu

But the name that is genrally agreed apon that was his name is that of yeh-ho-shoo'-ah with the which is translated Joshua in the scriptures. from which we get the contraction which would have actually been his Aramaic name which was the actual language spoken at the time of Yahshua.

If you want to be technical I realize that many of us sabbitarian, torah persuant, brethern try very hard to use his name instead of Jesus however Jesus is not from pagan origins as commonly gets reported on forums like this and from mind numb everything is a sin we better lock ourselves in a closet to make sure we don't sin types.

The Septuagint renders Yehoshua (Joshua) son of Nun as "Iesus the son of Naue [Yehoshua Ben Nun].

Jesus is simply the anglisized version of the Greek Iesus.

One of the difficulties in determing whether the Greek (Iesous refers to Yeshua or Yehoshua are the limitations of the Greek language. It is impossible to pronounce the "h" in the middle of a word in Greek. It is transliterated as "Iesous" but it is pronounced Iesus, as 慰峥?is always pronounced as the Greek diphthong for a double-o (as in "boot"). Thus, Iesous could stand for either Yeshua or Yehoshua, and both are so rendered by the Septuagint (a Greek translation of the Old Testament Scriptures made several centuries B.C.) and in New Testament writings in reference to Jesus and Joshua.

The yodh is vocalized with the Hebrew vowel, tsere, a long e (IPA /e/) as in "neighbor" (but not diphthongized) not with a shva (IPA /蓹/) (as Y'shua) or segol (IPA /蓻/)(Yesh-shua). The final consonant is the voiced pharyngeal fricative ayin - 注 (a rough breathing guttural sound not found in Greek or English) sometimes transcribed by "`" (Yeshua`). The "a" represents the patach genuvah ("furtive" patach) indicating the consonant `ayin is pronounced after the "a" vowel, and the word's intonation is moved to the middle syllable (the characteristics of the furtive patach can be seen in other words, such as ruach. Thus, it is pronounced yay-SHOO-a`.

Edit

Even better YUHATEME Is it is also used in Isaiah 12.. Go plug in the hebrew into all of Isaiah 12 and read what it says. Its an eye opener.
Reply:Jesus the christ will do just fine, after all doesn't God know exactly who you are speaking too.
Reply:Yeshu!
Reply:I believe it is Yeshua(Jesus) YHVH(God.)
Reply:Neither....as he, whatever his name was, is not the Messiah as is easily proven to anyone who will take the time to learn (and unlearn a lifetime of church lies).

Name translation from english to hebrew?

Name translation from english to hebrew?
These are both Hebrew names:

danielle - 讚谞讬讗诇

I am wanting a tattoo of my name in hebrew. My name is Kaye-Jodie. Please could some one translate this for me

You know, just because the translation is for a tattoo it doesn't mean this question belongs in the tattoo section. Try the languages section.

拽讬讬-讙'讜讚讬

It shouldn't change much, but how do you pronounce it?
Reply:Peace has the good idea to ask a Rabbi, but don't mention it's for a tattoo, tattoos are forbidden by Judaism. YOTG would know since he speaks it, but I'm curious as to what that translates to. I know with Chinese/Japanese characters, what makes "sense" as a literal translation really makes no sense at all and looks like a jumble of characters. While Jodie is a Hebrew name, Kaye means Rejoice in Greek. If some other Hebrew speakers agree with YOTG, that's the way to go.
Reply:If ur Jewish ask ur Rabi or ask any Rabi, they could give u a trustworthy translation.
Reply:1) Wrong section. Go to Languages, Israel, or Religion

2) People need to know how to proounce your name

3) It's TRANSLITERATION you want, into Hebrew SCRIPT. Your name doesn't have a "translation"....it's just a name

4) Why pose? If this is your ethnic background, learn the language. If not, don't appropriate the language for a tacky tattoo.
Reply:Don't listen to Aliz, if you go somewhere reputable the chances are slim.

Don't listen to the people on here, they could give you the hebrew name of ANYTHING!

Why don't you go to a synogogue or ask a jewish friend to help you?
Reply:I don't think you should do it. There is too much of a chance to get blood poising from doing it.

Can anyone help me with a hebrew name?

My friend wants her name in Hebrew on a necklace for her birthday. But that's all the information that she gave me. I know nothing about Hebrew. I have found a website that sells beads with the Hebrew characters on them. So, I need to translate the name Brooke into Hebrew and I guess into the Hebrew characters so that I can order the beads. Please help. It doesn't have to be the name exactly if there's a Hebrew name with the same meaning that would be great.

Can anyone help me with a hebrew name?
You can easily transcribe Brooke into Hebrew:

讘专讜拽

kuf vav resh bet

I give you the letter names arranged as they should be spacially.

If you prefer to try to translate the meaning, there is a modern and somewhat uncommon name that means brook, creek, etc. and is pronounced Peleg.

驻诇讙

gimel lamed pe
Reply:What you didn't tell her was that while Hebrew reads from right to left you wrote out the letters left to right. She may have ordered it wrong! It should be Bet, Reish, Vav, Koof (rather than Kuf) Report Abuse

Reply:Whats your friends name if you email your friends hebrew name, i could probobally translate into a good hebrew name
Reply:There is a Webiste you can go to that will translate any name but it does cost about 6$ so here is the link below

What are some Hebrew last names for my character?

I'm writing a story about a girl in the distant future who is a descendent of a Jewish family. I don't really care of what region the name comes from, as long as it's Hebrew of some sort. Any suggestions?

What are some Hebrew last names for my character?
You'll find that there are several 'types' of Hebrew last names.

Some take after the family's profession -

Cohen (priest), Katzav (butcher), Shoyer (doorman, in Yiddish pronunciation).

Some take after title of the family's forefather

Matzliah (successful), Ram (high), Tzadik (righteous).

Some are in a form of "Ben" (Son of) followed by a Hebrew first name. There you'll find Ben-Amotz, Ben-Avi, Ben-Zvi, Ben-Ammi etc.

Many other names are translations of names from other languages.
Reply:Horowitz?
Reply:Yachanan which means gracious.
Reply:There are really only three surnames that are specifically Jewish in nature: variations on Cohen, Levy and Israel. These names are derived from tribal ancestry that were recorded by the Jewish people and recognized in synagogue with various distinctions.

The surname Cohen comes from kohein, the Hebrew word for priest, and refers to patrilineal descendants of Aaron. Variations on this surname include Cohn, Cahn, Cone, Kohn, Kahn and possibly Katz. Why Katz? I have been told that it is an acronym of Kohein Tzaddik, which means Righteous Priest, but is close enough to the German word for "cat" that it could be slipped past registrars who required German surnames!

The surname Levy comes from the biblical tribe of Levi, whose descendants the Levites had distinctive duties in the Temple period. Variations on this surname include Levin, Levine, Levitt and many others.

Cohen and Levy are the two most common surnames among Jews in the United States (Miller is third, as mentioned above). Another specifically Jewish surname is Israel, which is much less common. Jewish thought often divides Jews into three groups: Kohein, Levy and Israel. Israel basically means the rest of us. Variations on this surname include Israeli, Yisrael, Yisroel and most notably Disraeli (the surname of a Jewish-born British Prime Minister and Earl who was baptized as a child but apparently retained some sense of Jewish identity).

Even these common specifically-Jewish surnames can be misleading, though. The surname Cohan (as in songwriter George M.) is usually Irish rather than Jewish. The surname Lavigne (as in singer Avril) is pronounced much like Levine, but it is a common gentile name among French Canadians.

What is the hebrew symbol for the name Leah?

It depends on how you pronounce the name.

Generally, since this is originally a Hebrew name from the bible, it is supposed to be written 诇讗讛 and be pronounced leh-ah.

But if you pronounce it in a different way and want it to be written the way you pronounce it, then it could be 诇讬 for 'lee' or 诇讬讗讛 for 'lee-yah' (like the princess).

If this is for a tattoo, feel free to contact me on my website for more details and help with this translation and designing it for a tattoo. :)

What is the hebrew symbol for the name Leah?
Hebrew doesn't use symbols, it uses letters, and the writing for "Leah" depends on what you mean.

If you mean for the original Biblical name (Jacob's first wife), then it's indeed 诇讗讛 (pronounced "Le'ah"), just like Gadiel wrote.

If you want to know how to write "Leah" (sounds like "Lee") in Hebrew, then it's just 诇讬.
Reply:诇讗讛 i think it would be that

How would the name spelled in Hebrew? How would in be pronounced? Please spell this out phonetically?

Thomas would be spelled: 转讜止诪指讗住

It is pronounced pretty much the same as in English, only that in Hebrew there is no 'th' sound so it's more like "tomas"

What is a good Hebrew name for a girl (not overused)?

The father of my child is Jewish and it would really mean a lot to him if our little girl had a Hebrew first name (the middle name doesn't need to be Hebrew). The issue I've had is that there are a lot of names that are gorgeous, but are horribly overused (i.e. Hannah, Rachel, Elizabeth) and on the other end of the spectrum, there are names that are insane. I want a name that people know, but I want my daughter to be the only one in her class with that name. I'm really lost!

Our last name is Kantor (pronounced Kanter).

What is a good Hebrew name for a girl (not overused)?
Eleora...Lord is my light.

Ilana, (Uhh., thats an i then an L...but you can't really tell the difference when you capitalize the i)

Jubilee.

Tovah.

And names with EL in them mean they have something to do with God. As El is God.
Reply:My name is Rachel and I'm Jewish :) I love my name. And my Jewish neighbors' last name is Kantor... Weird.

Anyway, here are some ideas:

Leah, Sarah, Aliza, Dalia, Daniella, Eliana, Leila, Maya, Michaela, Rebecca, Talia
Reply:Congrats!! Well I love this name, it means Lion Of God.

Arielle. It also goes well with your last name. Its pronounced like this 'ah ree EL' or 'AYR ee el'. Not sure how used it is. I've only meet one girl with it.

I really love it, hope you like it too! Have a great day.

Also, if you have the time, please help!

Why are Hebrew names of all Prophets in the Quran written as a different Arabised name?

Avraham - Ibrahim

Moshe - Musa

Ayyob - Ayub

Yosep - Yusuf

I think a man can have only 1 name. If someone had said "Musa" to Moshe in a crowd, Moshe wouldn't know he was being spoken to.

If the Quran existed before the universe was born, why didn't the Hebrew prophets ever know their actual real name?

(This is the same for Christians who say the bible is literally the word of God, since the original Hebrew names are also changed).

Why are Hebrew names of all Prophets in the Quran written as a different Arabised name?
This is because Mohammed (PBUH) had a hard time explaining things to Umar, one of the very first muallaf.

Umar was so darn idiotic when given the original names.

So its either the names be adapted (along with the whole Qur'an) or Umar and the rest of the young terrorist keep their blank stare at Mohammed (PBUH)

Mind you, Mohammed (PBUH) was ready to throw the grenade to the lot of them because of his impatience
Reply:maybe coz each one of these religions have been in different languge
Reply:ok can i say sumthing, firstly muslims and hebrews had different accents, that could be explaination one, futhermore all names are very similar, there is also no contrast between these names and the christain religion.. jus different accents again.. also the muslim religion was the last revelation.

another point of mine is that all holy books were written in the same context, by one.. soo seriously get over it. and stop being an anti seminst
Reply:This is the Arabic language my friend not the Quran

for example you say Muhammed , but this is not his right name

you can't write his right name in English that's because of different letters in different languages
Reply:Words are written as people pronounce in different languages. It is same God who told old stories to Abraham, Moses, Jesus and Mohammad. And they wrote as they could pronounce the words. You are looking at spellings on Roman English. They change as how people chose to write with their own spellings. Todays books are also translations from one language to other. Hebrews can not say

Salam, they always say Shalom. Arabs don't have letter

P, they have letter B close to P. So in Englsih we call

a fruit APPLE but Arab calls it Abble, because they can not pronounced any thing with leter P. This is how spellings change from one language to another.
Reply:But even in the translated version of the bible to Arabic they have those names ..and they also differ in names in the English translation of the bible than the Hebrew one.. i think the reason could be that people has changed these names to suit their tongues ..so if God spoke to the Arab Jews calling Ibrahim as Avraham they may not recognize him .
Reply:Of course the blueprint for the Universe existed before it was created. Whether you accept as the blueprint Thora, the Baghavad Gita, or the Quran, is up to you.

It can be legitimately argued that both the Christian Bible and the Muhamedan Quran are not original because they plagiarize large sections of Thora.

Question is, what can or must you do about it? Will those who forge and change the will of God not find out for themselves where they have gone wrong?
Reply:...the Koran is a flawed text by a false prophet who could not read or write...(clearly the Tanakh has identified the Prophets correctly)... The promise of God (YHVH) was given to Abraham, not Ishmael the son of the slave Hagar who abandon the faith and went out on their own...
Reply:Hebrew and Arabic are two languages that are similar to each other. Letters in a language are just symbols of a language to create pronunciation.

There are patterns across different languages. Patterns mean that words are written similar to each other but with very slight differences (or changes of letters) that happen over the years and across languages. For example, pater, vater, and father. The pattern is that 'p' changed to 'v' and 'f' across the languages and over time.

Some letters are pronounced differently, but written the same in different languages. For example, in German, 'w' is pronounced 'v' and in English 'w' is pronounced 'w', therefore w is written the same way in both German and English, but it is pronounced differently across these two languages. (Ex: Volkswagen is written like that, but pronounced "VolksWagen" in English and "VolksVagen" in German) So, Moshe can be written like that but pronounced "Musa" by both languages.

The way the name is written reflects the way that language pronounces the letters (or the symbols.) If English has a silent "b" in debt, but writes it like that and another language has a silent 'b' then they may write it "det" and it would still mean the same thing. The same word (or name) is written two different ways, but the meaning is the same. Similarly, in Hebrew they may write Moshe but pronounce is "musa", and in Arabic they may write it Musa because they pronounce it that way. Therefore, it is the same name, same meaning, but written differently.

Hebrew Name Tattoo?
Megan doesn't translate into Hebrew, and I wouldn't do it - I think it's much nicer in English than the Hebrew alternatives offered here (though they are good ones).

Megan in Hebrew is spelled (right to left):

Mem

Yod

Yod

Gimmel

Nun

or written out (if it will let me)

诪讬讬讙谉
Reply:Do you want to first translate the name to Hebrew, or just write MEGAN in Hebrew.

If you want to translate, both margalit and p'nina are good - they both basically mean pearl, which apparently is what megan means. (Who knew?) And they are both names in Hebrew.

If you just want to write MEGAN, this is tough. It is not a name that easily transliterates to Hebrew. Here are the options:

margalit: Mem-Resh-Gimmel-Lamed-Yud-Taf

p'nina: Peh-Nun-Yud-Nun-Yud

megan: Mem-Yud-Gimmel-Nun (that's a long Nun) or

Mem-Yud-Gimmel-Aleph-Nun (again, a long Nun)
